Morning Prayer, 2nd Saturday in Ordinary Time

OPENING SENTENCES

O Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Be willing, O God, to deliver us!

O Lord, come quickly to our help!

Through Christ then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.  (Hebrews 13:15)

THE GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. AMEN.

THE MORNING PSALM

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;

let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

For the Lord is a great God,

and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth;

the heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,

and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

all day long an attacker oppresses me;

my enemies trample on me all day long,

for many attack me proudly.

When I am afraid,

I put my trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

What can flesh do to me?

All day long they injure my cause;

all their thoughts are against me for evil.

They stir up strife, they lurk;

they watch my steps,

as they have waited for my life.

For their crime will they escape?

In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!

You have kept count of my tossings;

put my tears in your bottle.

Are they not in your book?

Then my enemies will turn back

in the day when I call.

This I know, that God is for me.

In God, whose word I praise,

in the Lord, whose word I praise,

What can man do to me?

THE PSALM PRAYER

True and ever-living God, the only help and support of all your poor afflicted people: Destroy the enterprise of all our enemies, and let all that trust in your promises feel your fatherly goodness. Do not despise our prayers, but be helpful to your children in the time of our troubles, that we, being assured of your favor, need not regard the attacks of our enemies, but may render unto you continual praises for delivering us out if all dangers. Through Jesus Christ, your dear Son. AMEN.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON

A reading from Isaiah, chapter 46:

Bel bows down; Nebo stoops;

their idols are on beasts and livestock;

these things you carry are borne

as burdens on weary beasts.

They stoop; they bow down together;

they cannot save the burden,

but themselves go into captivity.

Listen to me, O house of Jacob,

all the remnant of the house of Israel,

who have been borne by me from before your birth,

carried from the womb;

even to your old age I am he,

and to gray hairs I will carry you.

I have made, and I will bear;

I will carry and will save.

To whom will you liken me and make me equal,

and compare me, that we may be alike?

Those who lavish gold from the purse,

and weigh out silver in the scales,

hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;

then they fall down and worship!

They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,

they set it in its place, and it stands there;

it cannot move from its place.

If one cries to it, it does not answer

or save him from his trouble.

Remember this and stand firm,

recall it to mind, you transgressors,

remember the former things of old;

for I am God, and there is no other;

I am God, and there is none like me,

declaring the end from the beginning

THE CANTICLE                                              Te Deum Laudamus                We Praise You, O God

We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as Lord;

all creation worships you, the Father everlasting.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

THE EPISTLE LESSON

A reading from Ephesians, chapter 6:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts. Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.  (Ephesians 6:10-24)

The Prayers for Grace

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray that you will so guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life, we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

Eternal God, your Son, Jesus Christ, now exalted as Lord of all, pours out his gifts on the church: Grant us that unity which your Spirit gives, keep us in the bond of peace, and bring all creation to worship before your throne, Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. AMEN

Saturday Morning Prayers

Almighty God, our Father and Preserver: We give you thanks that of your goodness you have watched over us the past night and brought us to a new day. And we beseech you to strengthen and guard us by your Spirit; that we may spend it completely in your service and to your glory, looking to your blessing for all prosperity, and seeking only those things which are well pleasing in your sight. Enable us, O Lord, while we labor for the life that now is, always to consider that heavenly life that you have promised to your children. Defend us body and soul from all harm. Reveal your steadfast love to all people, according to the need of every living soul, especially those whom we love and those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, whom we now remember silently before you (here let there be a moment of silence); protect our country and prosper your Church here in North America; bless those who do good in the world, and restrain and avenge those who do evil. And finally, be pleased to cast out of your remembrance all our past offenses, forgiving them in your boundless mercy and purifying our hearts, that we may lead a better life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

The Prayers of the Day

O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. AMEN.

God of mercy: Help us to forgive, as you have forgiven us: Help us to trust you, even when our hope is failing; help us to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray together:

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
