A Morning Offering:

A Liturgy for First Rising

When you first wake up, let your first thoughts and action be to say good morning to God; offer yourself and your day to him. Each day begins with the Invocation and an Opening Sentence, continues with the daily offering, and then concludes with the closing prayer. Of course, you may add your own prayers at any time.

The Invocation

Open my lips, O LORD,

and my mouth will declare your praise.

Make haste, O God, to deliver me!

O LORD, make haste to help me!

The Opening Sentence

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Daniel 9:9-10

The Sunday Offering

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”

Luke 15:18-19

The Monday Offering

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Mark 8:34

The Tuesday Offering

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation…. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods…. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness.

Psalm 95:1, 3, 8

The Wednesday Offering

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he as stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him…. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

James 1:12, 16-17

The Thursday Offering

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”…. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; and in your light do we see light.

John 8:12; Psalm 36:7-9

The Friday Offering

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path…. Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end.

Psalm 119:105, 111-112

The Saturday Offering

Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and he relents over disaster.

Joel 2:13

The Closing Prayer

God our Father, as I begin this new day of your grace, I offer you all that I am—my words, my works, and the intentions of my heart; my joys and sufferings in this day I offer to you. Give me a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith, and fill me with your Spirit, that I may love as I have been loved and, together with all the saints, may celebrate your goodness and glorify your Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
